Have you ever wanted to just move in to your refrigerator when you feel sad? Is food really… a comfort? And if it is, what is it that gives it this “status”? According to the specialist, food is not only a source of comfort but it can also put you in a better mood on the spot! This is certainly true for all sweets (that should be consumed in moderation or sparingly or you run the risk of getting on the scale and really getting depressed…). But! There are some other “happy foods” (I like to call them this!), that do not only benefit your mood but your bodies too! What do you say? Shall we go get better acquainted with them, one at a time?
Milk: The reason it helps put you in a better mood is because it contains vitamin D. You see, this specific vitamin has the power to free serotonin – the well-known happiness vitamin! This happens when you drink it on its own… Imagine what happens when you add it to your sweet and dessert recipes. Yes, you may add a few more extra calories but along with them you add a lot of extra joy! Isn’t that right? ;-)
Saffron: Saffron threads are a natural anti-depressant, which battles stress as much as irritation and nerves!
Cinnamon: This aromatic ingredient has a way to control the blood sugar levels in your bodies. What does this mean? Well, basically that it has the power to stop those psychological ups and downs!
Avocado: The best fats that contribute to the increase of dopamine levels and the secretion of endorphins – 2 words synonymous with happiness!
White beans: The magnesium contained in white beans puts a distance between you and bad moods!
Bananas: Thanks to the tryptophan in bananas, the levels of serotonin (which is the happiness vitamin as we said before) rise along with your mood!
Dark chocolate: There is no reason to deny it! Dark chocolate (chocolate of any color really, has the power to relax you by slowing down the stress hormone in your body. At the same time it helps increase serotonin levels and produce endorphins.
Walnuts: The perfect snack! 5-10 walnuts are enough to “wake up” your brain and lower your cholesterol levels! This helps to ease your blood circulation which adds more pep and puts you in a better mood.
So there you have them! Some of the foods that have been proven to have the ability to alter the “chemistry” in your minds and set your mood soaring! All you have to do is “involve” them in your diet in one of the many ways I’ve proposed or come up with your own happy recipes. It would be nice if you would share them with me too! You know where to find me… ;-)
Eat happy, stay happy!
