Eat…your water!

Let's start with the (very) basics: Each body is different. Each person, therefore, has his own needs which are shaped according to his body, his physical activity, and even depending on the climate of the place where he lives! Apart from all that, however, it is summer and Greece is a country with fertile soil, fruits and vegetables - fortunately! - in abundance, so… It is up to us to make the most of the valuable - for our bodies- nutrients that they contain. Among them is… water! Perhaps the simplest one, but at the same time the most important. We often hear experts referring to the amount of water we should drink daily.

The water we consume, however, is not ONLY the water we drink. A significant part of it comes from the foods we eat. All of them (or almost all) contain water in their composition - some to a greater extent and others to a lesser extent. Among them, of course, we find fruits and vegetables which -in many cases- contain more than 90% water in their composition. This is exactly what we will talk about today, noting -at the same time- some of the main reasons why it is important to take care of our body’s proper hydration. So, what do you think? #1 Cucumber | 97% water

Yes, it is impressive that this particular vegetable consists of 97% water! The best part? There are countless ways to make cucumber part of our diet. It is a refreshing vegetable, which can enhance our salads and fill us up, while boosting our body with potassium and vitamin K.

#2 Lettuce | 96% water

It is such a plain and ordinary vegetable which, indeed, hides plenty of water in it. Specifically, 96% of its composition consists of water! This, in combination with the fiber it contains, the thiamine, the vitamins A and C, as well as its very low calories (only 14 kcal / 100 g), make lettuce our best “friend” every summer (and every time of the year as well)!

#3 Celery | 95% water

With only 7 calories per 50 g and 95% water content, celery is undoubtedly an ingredient which should be in our refrigerator. This is the good news. Even better, this particular vegetable contains vitamins A, K, and C, as well as folic acid.

#4 Spinach | 94% water

Rich in folic acid, potassium, vitamin E, fiber, and -of course- water, spinach is one of the most popular vegetables that can be eaten both cooked and raw.

Did you know that The better function of the metabolism is another positive element which is directly linked to the proper hydration of our body. You see, water helps to make good use of the nutrients that reach our body, while at the same time we burn more calories.

#5 Zucchini | 94% water

Very few calories and plenty of water. Zucchini is one of the vegetables with the highest water content, reaching 94%. In addition,100 g zucchini covers 26% of our body's daily need for vitamin C.

#6 Watermelon | 92% water

It is one of the all-time favorite summer fruits, loaded with… plenty of water, but also with many nutrients such as vitamins A, C, B6, and lycopene. In addition to the above, it also contains antioxidants that are valuable to our body.

#7 Cherry tomatoes | 91% water 

Cherry tomatoes contain -among many others- carotenoids, lycopene, and vitamin C. They can add color and flavor to our salads, make our dishes tastier, and become a first-class snack e.g. in a sandwich or a bruschetta.
