Cherries are here!

Ever since I was a child, every spring I would so look forward for the first cherries to appear! Impatientlly I might add, on the edge of my seat! They were at the top of my list along with ice cream! 

 

 

The other day I saw cherries at the supermarket and Ι was happily surprised because, due to the fact that I have been so busy, I dint’ t realize that the first, early cherries were here! On the other hand, as my grandmother used to say, the best cherries are those that are produced at the end of May until mid-June.

There are many cherry varieties and they are separated according to their colour and their flesh. Many of the varieties are used in making jams and sweets.

 

 

We must be very mindful when choosing cherries. If they are wrinkled or shrunken they are not good enough. Furthermore we must take into consideration even the colour of their stem. And you should remember: for immediate consumption, keep cherries in the refrigerator for only 2-3 days.

The truth is that cherries are my favorite fruits. They are vitamin rich and delicious and there are many recipes for you to enjoy them. I share with you 5 of my favorites.
