It is an unfortunate fact that over the last couple of years Greece has become a part of the countries that are at high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, even among the younger age groups.
Greece, as other countries in the South, has distanced itself from a healthy Mediterranean diet. Even though countries in Western Europe try to imitate and incorporate this type of diet into their daily routine.
So, in my effort to bring back this healthy type of diet into our lives, I have come up with 3 recipes that are beneficial for the heart. They are full of nutritional ingredients that should definitely be included in our weekly shopping list.
The first dish is Chickpea and Vegetable Stew with Fried Calamari. Chickpeas are a natural source of protein, rich in fiber and carbohydrates. Among the many benefits to your health, they also help protect you against a variety of different heart diseases.
Another wonderful dish that you can create in just half an hour, with just 3 eggplants and 5 tomatoes as basic ingredients! The Eggplant Caponata. It also contains a lot of healthy spices and other ingredients like onions, garlic, parsley, coriander, capers, olives and pine nuts.
One suggestion that will impress you as the perfect appetizer is the Roast Feta Cheese with Cherry Tomatoes and Olives. Absolutely mediterranean, delicious and tangy.
A great salad I recommend you serve along with almost any dish, is the Black Eyed Peas and Rice Salad.
It can also be served as a complete meal since it is a salad rich in beans, rice, aromatics and olive oil. Try it with some yogurt on the side, it suits it perfectly!
Follow the Mediterranean food pyramid that suggests you eat legumes, vegetables, fruit, olive oil, and dairy products on a daily basis, less meat and even fewer sweets.
You should enjoy your coffee but try not to go overboard… 1-2 cups a day.
I recommend my favorite Healthy Oatmeal and Tahini Cookies to help you enjoy your coffee even more. They are its perfect companion! Plus they are made with tahini, which is one of my favorite ingredients.
And as a last point, don’t forget that exercise and any type of physical activity leads to a better overall physical condition and helps minimizes weight gain and obesity. Try to run, jog or even a brisk walk. Try to add exercise into your daily routine!
