Whether you are in the city or on some majestic Greek island, I’m sure you are getting ready for the 15th of August which is called “Dekapentavgousto”. It is one of the biggest holidays in Greece that is held in honor of the Virgin Mary. Many friends may be celebrating their name days, having a celebration or get together at their homes or you may even be going to a traditional Greek “panigiri” to celebrate, where everyone dances till morning and feast on tantalizing local traditional foods. Anywhere you will be invited and anything you may have planned to do on this day, it will certainly be a good reason to see your family or friends and have a good time.
What happens when you are on the “other side”? Meaning the side that will be hosting the celebration or party? While all of your friends will be at the beach, swimming and on holiday, you are trying to organize your Special Holiday Meal for Dekapentavgousto? You have to think about how you want to decorate your space, get your guest list together and of course… the menu! Are you getting stressed? Good! The time has come to press pause and …. de-stress! Why? Well of course because any celebration is a good occasion to have a good time, not to get all stressed.
This is why I have collected the following advice to help you! Advice for organizing and decorating your space as well as great ideas for your menu – especially the menu! So sit back comfortably in your chair, pick up a pad and pencil and write down whatever you like and – of course – whatever you think your guests will like!
1. Make a list of your guests early on so that you can organize your shopping, your menu and be able to take care of all the details.
2. “Divide” your house making different spaces according to how you have your day planned out. For instance, begin inside the house or the veranda, where you will greet your guests. You can offer them a welcome drink there along with some appetizers…. that can stand the heat! Homemade iced tea and 3 homemade lemonades that I am suggesting will give you the perfect solution and will refresh your guests at any time during the day. The Olive Paste Palmiers and Spicy Cheese Biscuits that will put the breaks on your guest’s hunger until it is time to sit at the table.
3. If you’ve planned on setting the table outside, try using something other than a tablecloth. Use 2 runners along the length of the table or individual placemats. In this way, even if it is windy, you won’t have to look for ways to keep your tablecloth in place. Also try using a pretty pebble on each plate to help keep the napkins in place, while at the same time adding a more.. summery note to your festive table!
4. Now for the menu! One or two salads and two or three horderves can be on your table. Next step? The main dish that can be served on a large serving platter or directly on to your guest’s plates.
Here are some ideas to choose from:
What’s next on the menu? Dessert of course! The two most important things to remember about dessert is that it should be easy to make and refreshing when eaten! That’s exactly what these recipes are all about.. as well as flavor! That’s a given!
Banana Ice Cream in a minuteI saved a magical recipe for last that you can serve along with coffee or in a completely different way: Coffee Granita. As soon as your guest try they will love it so much that they won’t be able to wait to come back and celebrate the 15th of August – Dekapentavgousto at your house…
Best wishes to everyone!
