Kitchen Lab flies a kite!

Mardi Gras is here and I’m sure you are all trying to come up with great ideas for costumes to wear in order to celebrate one of our favorite times of the year!

Clean Monday is also right around the corner! It is like the Catholic Ash Wednesday. Another wonderful day that you can spend with family and friends, gathering together to enjoy all sorts of goodies that are traditionally served on that day. Flying a kite on this day is a symbolic gesture, bringing you closer to the divine.

In Greece, it is customary to be taken on various excursions or picnics from early childhood, where you learn to learn to fly a kite! Being raised in this way, the memory is very vivid in my mind and I thought I would relive it with my whole team somewhere nearby Kitchen Lab!

We made our own personal kite and what else? Our own recipes of course!! Traditional Clean Monday recipes like crunchy “Lagana”, a Greek sesame flatbread, “Taramosalata”, a delicious fish roe dip, Marinated Octopus, Spicy Olives and the ultimate classic dessert… “Halvah”!

Try making your own homemade Lagana to enjoy all of the real flavors, and aromas that add to making this day so special. It is really the perfect companion to the Taramosalata.

Imagine cutting off a piece of crunchy sesame flatbread, with such a warm, soft, fluffy interior… and scooping up some of the salty, tangy, smooth and deliciously creamy dip. All of these wonderful flavors and textures combining in your mouth while you are surrounded by friends…. in nature…. under the clear blue skies and warm Mediterranean sun. Does it sound too good to be true? It’s not! This is what my day was like!

You will also love the Balsamic Braised Octopus Stew with Olives as a main course! The octopus is so soft and juicy… with a hint of spiciness. It’s perfect for a picnic. Try serving it with some ouzo for the grown-ups!

Nothing could make this meal more complete than Halvah.  The soft, sweet, spiced semolina cake that literally melts in your mouth. Everyone will enjoy it thoroughly and will want the recipe!

I thought I’d offer some advice you might find useful before you set off on your picnic. My Diary will help you organize the perfect picnic!

Try to assign one of your friends or family to their specific kitchen duties in order to get prepared! Of course you can easily make everything by yourselves and surprise them!

Happy Clean Monday from the whole team at Kitchen Lab and myself. Have a great time!
