5+1 reasons to… get the last chestnuts

A little time is left before we say goodbye to chestnuts until the next winter, and I thought of sharing with you a few of my favorite desserts, which we could make with the last chestnuts of the season. But, before we get to the recipes, how would you like it if we started with more…general information for this unique winter fruit? I’m sure that when you read about them, you’ll love them even more!

  1. In comparison with other nuts (like almonds or walnuts), chestnuts contain fewer fats and calories (per 100 g), while they’re rich in complex carbs.
  2. Chestnuts are rich in fiber, which contributes to the proper function of the digestive system, while they’re a good source of magnesium which contributes to forming, boosting, and protecting the bones. 
  3. They are rich in potassium, while they are low in sodium. What does that mean? That they can be consumed by people with high blood pressure.
  4. They are gluten-free, which makes them perfect for those who are intolerant to the particular kind of protein.
  5. They are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which protect the cardiovascular system and contribute to reducing bad cholesterol. Moreover, due to the complex B vitamins and folic acid that they contain, they even contribute to boosting the neuromusculoskeletal system.

All of the above information concern chestnuts in their simplest -but very tasty- form. Boiled or roast.
