Where do they come from?

The strawberry is a fruit that belongs to the Rosaceae family that has about 15 species native to the Northern temperate regions. It possibly originated in Chile. The varieties that you enjoy daily is a product of a  development of the variety of the small, rich red strawberry that was cultivated in Virginia in the 19th century.

When should they be planted?

Strawberries are consumed during the summer months and are planted outdoors in March.

Strawberries, primarily, need to have a good drainage system. Other than that the ideal climate for strawberries is spring and/or summer.

How to choose the best ones:

You don't want your strawberries to be bruised, shrivelled or soft. Choose fresh looking, shiny strawberries that are bright red and have green leaves on their stem. Avoid the ones that are green on the top and opt for the ones smaller in size since they are supposed to have a richer flavor than the rest.

How to use them:

In fruit salads, vegetable salads, sweets, marmalades, jams, juices, ice cream, smoothies.... Wash them thoroughly, dry them off and carefully remove their stem with a small, pointed knife. You can also use a straw and insert it through the middle of the strawberry from the bottom towards the top. This motion will remove the stem.

It is important you remember to remove the stem AFTER washing the strawberries since it will not allow any water to go into the strawberry and affect its taste in any way.

Storing secrets:

If you don't intend on consuming them immediately after buying them, refrigerate them without washing. You can store them there for about a week. After this amount of time, you should either eat them or cook them. You can also store them in the freezer for about 5-6 months. In order to do this, wash them and allow them to dry on paper towels. Then remove the stem with one of the ways mentioned above, spread them on a sheet of parchment paper and place them as they are until they freeze. It is important that they are not touching one another as they freeze. After this, place them in freezer bags and store them in the freezer until needed.
