Beetroots belong to the Amaranthoid family. It can reach a height of 1 ½ meters and is considered a vegetable that is valuable to the human body.  This is due to the high content of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. At this point it is worthy to note that beetroots are also rich in carbohydrates, magnesium, nitrate salts, iron, potassium sodium, nitrate, vitamin C and folic acid. Their deep red color is caused by the presence of betalain. What do you say? Are you ready to get to know this delicious vegetable a little better?

When should they be planted?

Beets can be planted at two different times. In June or August, if you want to enjoy them in the fall or from February up to April if you want to specialize in… spring beetroots! It will take anywhere from two and a half to five months for the beetroots to be ready to collect from the time you plant them.

When are they in season?

Beetroots can be found almost every season during the year. The time of their sowing will depend on the season they will be ready, which as we mentioned above can be both in spring and in autumn.

Don’t have any?

If you don’t have any beetroots and you want to add them to your cooking you can use the equal amount of carrots in their place. Now, if you need their leaves, you can use radish leaves or spinach.

How to choose the best beetroots

Their leaves should have that characteristic dark green color, while the bulbs should be smooth and fresh looking. Finally, it would also be good to be sure where they come from (something which goes for all of the fruit and vegetables you buy), since they grow in the soil. What does this mean? It means that apart from the valuable nutrients they absorb from the soil in order to grow, they can also absorb elements that are harmful for your bodies (like pesticides).

How to use them:


You can enjoy beetroots, raw, boiled or roasted. In each case, you need to cut off the leaves and wash the bulbs thoroughly. If you want to use the leaves, then you need to wash them thoroughly also. If you want to eat the beetroots raw, then you need to peel their skin with a knife like the way you peel a potato. If you boil them, remove the peel after boiling.

Storing secrets:

After washing thoroughly, cut off the stems with the leaves. Place the bulbs in a bowl and cover with a damp towel to keep them fresh. If you want to keep the leaves fresh, simply place them in a jar or a tall glass full of water. You can also freeze your beetroots, after you boil them, peel them and place them in freezer bags divided in to portions.
